Turning 50: Investing in the Wealth That Matters

This year, I turn 50. Instead of a big party, I’ve decided to celebrate in a way that reflects what I value most—connection, adventure, and shared experiences with the people who matter. Inspired by a dear friend who did something similar for his milestone birthday, I’m inviting friends to join me throughout the year in meaningful experiences—whether it’s a hike, a road trip, a shared book, or simply a deep conversation over tea.

At this stage of life, I’ve come to realize that wealth isn’t just about money, and health isn’t just about diet and exercise. The truest forms of wealth and health come from the relationships we cultivate and the communities we build. The Harvard Study on Adult Development—one of the longest-running studies on happiness—has made it clear: the quality of our relationships is the single biggest predictor of our long-term health and happiness.

Yet, in our fast-paced, productivity-obsessed world, investing in relationships often gets pushed aside. We prioritize work, obligations, and personal goals while friendships and community ties fade into the background. But just like financial investments, relationships need consistent attention, nurturing, and time to grow. And the returns? They are priceless. Strong social connections lower stress, regulate our nervous systems, and even contribute to longevity.

So this year, I’m making my friendships and connections a priority. I’m saying yes to shared adventures, deep conversations, and moments of joy with the people who make life richer. This is my version of celebrating 50—not with a single party, but with a year-long investment in the wealth that truly matters.

How do you invest in your relationships? What small steps can you take to strengthen your connections today? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let’s build a life that is not just long, but deeply fulfilling.
