Abhyanga: My Daily Ritual for Nourishment and Balance

We are still in a fire warning, here in the Los Angeles area.  It is dry and unstable.  It has been for weeks. Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, but there’s a simple practice I turn to that helps keeps me grounded: Abhyanga, the ancient Ayurvedic ritual of self-oil massage. While traditionally performed as part of a morning routine, I’ve adapted it to fit my lifestyle, and it’s become a cherished part of my day.  This does not fix our cure the situation many of us find ourselves in at the moment, however, its one practice that helps nourish the skin and creates comfort and detoxification for the body. 

What Is Abhyanga?

Abhyanga is an Ayurvedic practice of massaging warm oil onto the body. Traditionally, it’s done before bathing to balance the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), nourish the skin, and calm the nervous system. The process involves applying oil in long strokes on the limbs and circular motions around joints, always moving toward the heart to support lymphatic drainage and circulation.

How I’ve Made It My Own

While I love the idea of heating oil in a special pot and creating a serene spa-like atmosphere, my version of Abhyanga is practical and fits right into my busy life as a single working mom. I keep sesame oil in a simple condiment bottle in my shower. (I buy organic sesame oil NOT TOASTED from the grocery store. You can also use grape seed oil or coconut oil.)

Here’s my process:

  1. Clean First: After washing my body with warm water, I use the shower as my sacred space to focus on self-care.

  2. Apply the Oil: I squeeze out the sesame oil (the steam from the shower keeps it at a nice temperature) and begin massaging it into my skin.

  3. Lymphatic Drainage Focus: I’ve incorporated gentle lymphatic drainage techniques into my massage. I use upward strokes on my legs and arms, soft circular motions around my abdomen, and light pressure on my chest and neck to encourage movement of lymph fluid.

  4. Let It Soak: I give the oil a few moments to sink in while enjoying the warmth of the shower. I let a light layer stay on my skin to keep it hydrated and nourished.

  5. Towel Dry: I use an inexpensive designated cotton towel to dry off as some of the oil can absorb into the towel. (I usually get as cheap cotton towel from target for around $5.

Why Sesame Oil?

Sesame oil is a traditional favorite in Ayurveda, and for good reason. It’s deeply moisturizing, warming, and grounding—perfect for balancing Vata dosha, which often goes out of balance during colder months or stressful times. I use a simple sesame oil from the grocery store (they also sell and organic bottle at Target), and it works beautifully for my needs.

The Benefits I’ve Experienced

Incorporating Abhyanga into my routine has brought me so many benefits:

  • Calmer Nervous System: The combination of touch and oil is incredibly soothing, especially when life feels chaotic.

  • Healthier Skin: My skin stays soft and hydrated, even in dry weather.

  • Improved Circulation: Focusing on lymphatic drainage has helped me feel lighter and less puffy.

  • A Moment of Connection: Taking a few minutes to care for my body reminds me to slow down and be present.

Bridging Tradition and Modern Life

In its traditional form, Abhyanga involves warming the oil separately, setting aside time for a full massage before bathing, and making it a meditative practice. While I admire the ritual’s roots, I’ve found joy in creating a version that works for me—one that’s efficient, nourishing, and easy to integrate into my day.
